As Year 9s, we are currently deciding our GCSEs options. This event was designed to help our awareness of possible careers in the future.

Upon arrival we sat through a presentation. The possible streams one could take after GCSEs, such as apprenticeships, vocational courses and A levels, were explained, as well as options for higher education. We also learnt about “transferable skills” such as teamwork and communication and understood that these skills could be developed through volunteering, which is highly looked upon by employers. Next, we had the chance to ask questions to a panel of people from different professions. It was definitely an interesting experience talking to them.

Then, we moved to the stalls which showcased many different companies. Some of the companies there were: Biogen (a bio-pharmaceutical company), Mars, University of Surrey, NHS and RAF (Royal Air Force) so there was a huge variety to explore. Some of the most popular stalls was Arvato which was giving free headphones as well as a goody bag and the Virtual Reality stall which provided a fun insight into the VR world and gaming. Unfortunately, the snack stall was for staff only but if it hadn’t been, I’m sure it would definitely have been really popular too!

Overall, we had loads of opportunities to talk to many different people and explore different options such as apprenticeships, universities, post-graduate courses and volunteering. At the same time, we could explore different sectors from finance and management to health care. This event provided a highly useful insight and definitely helped me expand my horizon and widen my perspective. I want to say thank you to all the teachers that let us have this fantastic privilege and opportunity.
