During Years 7-9 the following topics are taught.

Literature: Poetry through the Ages – Shakespeare to modern Developing engagement with poetry and understanding of poetic devices and their effect Modern Shakespeare – introduction to themes Overview of comedies, tragedies and history plays. Addressing contemporary issues i.e. colonialism, anti-Semitism and feminism through Shakespeare’s plays. Studying a novel Studying and evaluating a whole novel. An exploration of the presentation of a character.
Language: Fiction Writing Dystopian fiction: exploring setting, characterisation and sensory language, using excerpts from dystopian fiction. Non - fiction writing Letter, speech, review. Understanding the need to adapt content and tone to suit audience and purpose
Listening and Speaking – A speech on a current issue. |
Literature: The Gothic and Romantic genres Learning about poetry and prose of the Gothic and the Romantic genres across time; writing in the style of a Gothic writer. Modern Shakespeare - Macbeth Learning how to approach a whole play, using aspects of war and conflict to support the study. Studying a novel: ‘Animal Farm’ Studying and evaluating a whole novel. Learning about the importance of context. Focus on how the text is still relevant. Language: Short stories: Exploring a selection of short stories for relatable themes and as an inspiration for creative writing. Building up on skills from Y7 – narrative perspective, voice and chronology. Module to revise reading and writing of Non-fiction. Focus on accuracy. Listening and Speaking – A presentation (GCSE style – might be Macbeth related) |
Literature: Studying a novel: John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men Studying an extended novel and learning about the social and historical context of this time period; examining how shifts in political and social climates influence literary responses. Modern Shakespeare: Othello OR: Much Ado about Nothing Mirroring the study skills needed to access the text at GCSE level.
To explore and analyse poems in the GCSE anthology in preparation for KS4. To introduce the SP play of study.
Language: Non-fiction and creative writing skills and reading skills. Practising and studying key writing and communication skills using a range of resources and stimulus (in preparation for GCSE English Language). Listening and Speaking - Practising communication skills – discussion and debating |
